My Copier Entered on the Leader But Not the Follower — What Happened?

You're in a trade on the leader. One follower is sitting flat. It's not always a malfunction — here's the decision tree for figuring out exactly what went wrong and what to do next.

My Copier Entered on the Leader But Not the Follower — What Happened?

You place the trade on your leader. It fills. You glance at the dashboard and see follower #2 is still flat. The copier said it sent the order. The account looks connected. So what happened?

There are six distinct causes for this scenario, and each has a different fix. Working through them in order is faster than guessing.

The Diagnosis Decision Tree

Step 1: Check Whether the Copier Generated the Order

Open the Copilink order log. Did it log a follower order for that account around the time of the leader entry?

  • If yes (order generated and marked "sent") → go to Step 2
  • If no (no follower order in the log) → go to Step 4

Step 2: Check the Broker's Order History

Log into the broker portal directly (Tradovate web app or Rithmic's interface) for the follower account. Check the order history for the time of the entry.

  • Order received and filled → NinjaTrader has a display/sync issue. The position exists at the broker but NT isn't showing it. Force a position sync: disconnect and reconnect the follower's broker connection in NinjaTrader.
  • Order received and rejected → go to Step 3
  • Order not received → the order was lost in transit. Likely a connection issue at the moment of sending. Check the NinjaTrader log for connection events around that timestamp.

Step 3: Why Was the Order Rejected at the Broker?

Common rejection reasons on prop firm accounts:

  • Contract limit exceeded — the number of contracts the copier tried to place exceeds the account's scaling limit. Reduce the contract ratio for this follower.
  • Insufficient margin — rare on funded accounts but possible if the account had an existing position that consumed margin. Check for any open positions that should have been closed.
  • Instrument not permitted during current session — some prop firm accounts have trading hours restrictions. Verify the follower account is permitted to trade this instrument at this time.
  • Account in a restricted state — some firms temporarily restrict accounts during review or payout processing. Check your firm's portal for account status.

Step 4: Why Didn't the Copier Generate a Follower Order?

If the Copilink log shows no follower order was generated at all, the issue is upstream of the broker:

  • The follower account wasn't active in the copier configuration — verify the account is listed and enabled in the Copilink follower list, not just connected in NinjaTrader
  • A risk rule blocked the order — if the account had already hit its daily loss limit, or was in a locked state from a previous session, the copier intentionally blocked the order. Check the Copilink risk dashboard for account lock status
  • The account's instrument mapping wasn't configured — if the leader traded an instrument not mapped to this follower, no order generates. Verify instrument mappings in follower settings
  • NinjaTrader lost the account's connection between the copier detecting the leader order and sending the follower order — check connection logs for micro-disconnects

What to Do Right Now (While the Trade Is Live)

While you're diagnosing, a decision needs to be made about the follower that's flat:

  • If the leader is near its entry price: you can manually enter on the follower at current price, setting stops and targets to match the leader. Low incremental risk.
  • If the leader has already moved significantly in profit: entering now means accepting a worse entry and potentially chasing. Evaluate whether the risk/reward still makes sense at current price.
  • If you can't diagnose it quickly: leave the follower flat for this trade. One missed trade is less costly than a manual entry that creates a position mismatch the copier then mishandles on the close.

After the trade closes, run the full diagnosis, identify the root cause, and resolve it before the next session. Recurring missed entries on the same follower almost always trace back to one of the Step 4 causes — usually a configuration issue or a persistent connection problem on that specific account.
