What To Do When Your Follower Account Falls Out of Sync Mid-Session

Your leader is in a trade but one follower didn't enter. Or it entered but won't close. Here's the exact steps to take when a follower account desyncs during a live session.

What To Do When Your Follower Account Falls Out of Sync Mid-Session

It happens fast. You're in a trade on the leader, market is moving in your direction, and you glance at the dashboard and notice follower account #3 shows no open position. Or the opposite — you closed the leader trade, everything looks flat, but one follower is still holding.

Mid-session desync is stressful because you're trying to manage an active trade while simultaneously dealing with an infrastructure problem. The key is knowing the exact response procedure before it happens, so you're not improvising under pressure.

Scenario 1: Follower Missed an Entry

Your leader entered a long. One follower didn't get the entry signal. The leader is now in a live trade; the follower is sitting flat.

Do not manually force-enter on the follower unless you fully understand the current position size, stop placement, and where you are relative to the follower account's risk parameters. Entering manually mid-trade can create a position that the copier then tries to "close" with a conflicting order when the leader exits.

Your options:

  • Leave it flat for this trade. If the position is already significantly in-profit on the leader, entering the follower now means accepting a worse average entry and potentially chasing. Depending on where price is relative to your original entry, the risk/reward on a late entry may not be acceptable.
  • Manually enter on the follower at current price — only if you're comfortable with the current risk/reward, the entry is close to the original, and you configure the stop manually to match what the leader is carrying.
  • Check whether the copier logged the missed order and identify why it failed before deciding whether to intervene.

Scenario 2: Follower Won't Close

Leader is flat. One follower is still holding an open position. This is more urgent because the follower is now unmanaged — if the market moves against it, the position is growing in loss without any oversight.

Immediately:

  1. Open the follower account's order interface in NinjaTrader directly
  2. Place a manual close order (market order to flatten) on that account
  3. Do not wait to diagnose the cause — close first, investigate second

After you've closed the position, check the NinjaTrader log to understand why the close didn't replicate. Connection event? Rejected order? Copier logged the close as sent but it didn't execute?

Scenario 3: Follower Has Opposite Position to Leader

This is the most dangerous scenario. Leader is long; follower somehow ended up short. This can happen if a manual order was placed on the follower while the copier was also active, or if a stale reverse order executed during a reconnect event.

You now have a cross-account hedge — which some prop firms prohibit even across different accounts. Depending on your firm's rules, this may already be a violation if it's been open for more than a brief period.

Close both sides immediately:

  1. Exit the follower's incorrect position manually via direct order
  2. Pause the copier temporarily until you understand what caused the reversal
  3. Document the incident with timestamps in case you need to explain it to the prop firm

Prevention: Before the Session Starts

The best response to mid-session desync is not having it happen in the first place. A 60-second pre-session check:

  • Verify all follower accounts show the expected starting position (flat, unless you're carrying an overnight position intentionally)
  • Confirm all accounts show green/connected status in the copier dashboard
  • Check that NinjaTrader has stable connections to all broker accounts — no pending reconnects or partial data feeds
  • If running on a VPS, RDP in and confirm the session is stable before markets open

Copilink surfaces account status and any connection anomalies in the dashboard before you start trading, so you can catch potential sync issues before they become mid-session problems. If an account isn't in the expected state at session open, you know before placing the first order — not after.
