Prop Firm Platform Compatibility Guide: Which Firms Work With NinjaTrader, Tradovate, and Rithmic

The platform question isn't just about preference — it's a compatibility constraint. A prop firm account can only be traded through the broker that firm has partnered with, and that broker can only be accessed through the platforms it supports. Before building your infrastructure around NinjaTrader or committing to a specific copier setup, you need to know that the firms you're targeting actually work with the stack you're building.

Here's the full compatibility picture for the major firms as of 2026.

The Core Broker Relationships

Most major retail futures prop firms route through one of two primary brokers: Tradovate or Rithmic. The broker determines which execution platform connections are available.

Tradovate-based firms: Accounts at these firms are Tradovate accounts, accessed through Tradovate's API. NinjaTrader connects to Tradovate through its native NinjaTrader connection type (use the "NinjaTrader" connection, not the legacy "Tradovate" connection). Tradovate's own web platform also works for these accounts. Rithmic is not available for Tradovate-brokered accounts.

Rithmic-based firms: Accounts route through Rithmic's DMA infrastructure. NinjaTrader connects via the Rithmic plugin (requires Plugin Mode for multiple simultaneous connections). The NinjaTrader Connection Type That Matters

A common configuration error: traders connect Tradovate-brokered prop accounts using the legacy "Tradovate" connection type in NinjaTrader rather than the newer "NinjaTrader" connection type. The legacy connection has session limitations that prevent running multiple accounts simultaneously. The NinjaTrader connection type resolves this and supports unlimited simultaneous account connections.

The connection type selection appears in NinjaTrader's Connection Manager. When adding a new Tradovate account, select "NinjaTrader" (or "NinjaTrader Brokerage" depending on version) — not "Tradovate." This single configuration choice is the difference between being able to run 15 accounts simultaneously and hitting session conflicts after the third connection.

Trade Copier Compatibility

For NinjaTrader-based local copiers (Copilink, Replikanto): both work with all Tradovate-brokered firms and both work in Rithmic environments (with appropriate configuration for Rithmic's Plugin Mode requirements).

Cloud copiers (TradeSyncer and similar): work with Tradovate-brokered accounts through their API integration. Rithmic compatibility varies by provider — check the specific cloud copier's documentation for Rithmic support status.
